Dumped to fend for herself over a year ago, Misty finally was rescued on Sunday. Misty had been "living" on a property for over a year, enduring the hot summers, and the blizzards this past February. The owners of the house befriended her, and fed her everyday. Nonetheless, Misty would not come too close to them. Misty would sleep close to their house at night, and would bark to wake them when their newborn baby cried. She wanted to be a loving pet again, but just couldn't trust after she had been abandoned.
Other rescues were contacted throughout the year, with words of encouragement, and a "If you get her, we will take her if we have room" attitude. No one would come out and try to help catch Misty. The homeowners finally contacted A Buddy For Life, Inc. Our response? What are we waiting for?!?!! Let's do it!
One of her caretakers graciously donated a Hav A Heart trap big enough for Misty to fit it. You see, the rescue has one, just not big enough for a Rotti mix! Her caretakers graciously followed our recommendations, set the trap with yummy KFC, and within 5 hours, Misty was trapped.
Half of the battle was won. However, getting to know Misty and teaching her how to trust again is whole other battle. Patiently and quietly, we moved Misty, trap and all, to a safe indoor place, where we could asses her and start working with her. Feeding her KFC and hamburgers quickly allowed her to trust us, and within no time she was out of the trap and into a foster home who will rehabilitate her.
Today is Misty's second full day of being rescued. She is doing well, and learning the ropes from her foster brother. Her foster parents are working with her to socialize her, and to show her what love is all about. Misty has already remembered how good back scratches feel. She is a timid, cautious girl, who will improve with time and love. Misty would do best in a quiet patient home who will continue to work with her to show her that humans are good. She has come a long way, and just needs some work on meeting new people. She is not aggressive, but will bark at strangers, as she does not know if they are friend or foe. Her foster mom is working with her on this issue, and she is doing great!
